Influence of overcharge and overdischarge of lithium battery energy storage power supply on safety

2023-03-24

Lithium-ion battery energy storage power sources can lead to overcharging when misused or abused. Due to the large amount of gas generated inside the battery during overcharging, there is a danger of explosion. When the lithium-ion battery is overcharged, the battery voltage rises rapidly with the increase of polarization, which will cause irreversible changes in the structure of the positive active material and the decomposition of the electrolyte, a large amount of gas will be generated, and a large amount of heat will be released, causing the battery temperature and internal pressure to increase sharply , there are hidden dangers such as explosion and combustion.
Safety issues caused by overcharge and overdischarge of lithium battery energy storage power supply:

Lithium-ion batteries (lithium battery energy storage power sources) can be overcharged when misused or abused. Due to the large amount of gas generated inside the battery during overcharging, there is a danger of explosion. When the lithium-ion battery is overcharged, the battery voltage rises rapidly with the increase of polarization, which will cause irreversible changes in the structure of the positive active material and the decomposition of the electrolyte, a large amount of gas will be generated, and a large amount of heat will be released, causing the battery temperature and internal pressure to increase sharply. , there are hidden dangers such as explosion and combustion.

The purpose of testing the overcharge and overdischarge of lithium battery energy storage power supply:

For the explosion of lithium-ion batteries under abuse conditions such as thermal shock, overcharge, overdischarge, and short circuit, the overcharge test of the battery is an important means to detect the safety performance of the battery. Battery safety in case of failure. If the battery passes this test, it means that the chemical design (including electrolyte design, material selection, positive and negative electrode capacity ratio, etc.) and structural design in the battery are reasonable.

How to prevent overcharge and overdischarge of lithium batteries in energy storage power sources:

1. In order to prevent overcharging, a dedicated charging circuit is usually used, or a safety valve is installed to provide a greater degree of overcharging protection.

2. A positive temperature coefficient resistor (PTC) can also be used. The positive temperature coefficient resistor can increase the internal resistance of the battery when the battery is overcharged and the temperature rises, and limit the overcharge current.

3. A special diaphragm can also be used. When the temperature of the diaphragm is too high due to an abnormality in the battery, the pores of the diaphragm will shrink and block, preventing the migration of lithium ions and preventing overcharging.

4. If a special charger is used to charge the lithium-ion battery, the charging voltage will generally be limited within 4.2V, and the battery will not have any safety problems. However, if the special charger is not used, or the charger fails and the battery is seriously overcharged, it may cause the battery to catch fire and explode. The charge control of the battery is very important, otherwise, there are serious safety problems.
